A Mighty Force

What a mighty force a river is. We all saw the television images of the raging Mississippi wiping out entire towns. A river seems to be unstoppable. You can build levees against it and pile sandbags to the skies, but it keeps on flowing. You can dam it up, but it just rises higher until it overflows its banks and spreads over the land.

The only way to stop a river is to cut it off at its source. Since the river Ezekiel saw flowed from the temple of God, that is the only place where it can be stopped. It would seem that the Christian himself is the only one who can stop this mighty flow of power. God forbid that we should be guilty of restricting the waters of His love and power that should flow from us.

What a life-giving force this water is. Water is so very common but so very priceless. One writer said, “Water is used to cool engines, produce electricity, regulate temperatures. To produce one loaf of bread takes three hundred gallons. Between cattle rancher, butcher, packager, and processor, four thousand gallons of water will be used to put a pound of beef in the supermarket. The building of one automobile requires ten thousand gallons. The human body is seventy percent water. We are constantly losing this precious liquid, and if it’s not replaced quickly, we will die.”4

Notice also that where the waters flow, the trees will grow. “When I had returned, behold, at the bank of the river were very many trees on the one side and on the other,” Ezekiel said (v. 7). Where these life-giving waters flow, there will be life rather than a sterile desert of death.

A healthy saint is pictured in the Bible as “a tree planted by the rivers of water” (Psalm 1:3). Therefore, a Spirit-filled believer should be like a river whose life will strengthen fellow believers. We are not to be reservoirs of truth but rivers of blessings to those around us.

And where the waters flow, the fish will go.
